Santa Cruz Streets
This project brought up a great deal of controversy in myself, the viewers, and the subjects being photographed. The series brings up questions such as is it morally right to take pictures of people on the streets since they are in public, or is it an invasion of privacy? I struggled internally with issues about privacy, exploitation, and misrepresentation. Yet, this series was incredibly important to me to share to the public eye. Living in Santa Cruz as a student, and seeing the homeless population grow every year and the problems surrounding it become more serious and prevalent, I wanted to bring attention to this issue. Through these images, I attempted to bring awareness to the comparison and stark differences between the homeless and those more privileged. I was very careful to take these photographs in a manner that the subjects are not recognizable, either facing away, their face partially obscured, or blurred from a distance. I believe that this solves the issue of invasion of privacy.
